Chuck Liddell, the Iceman, has been a mixed martial arts fighter since 1998 and was one of the best and most popular. He is one of the people held responsible for getting the sport off the ground and turning it into one of the fastest growing sports in the world today.
Chuck has spent a good amount of time in the UFC and a lot of that time as the light heavyweight champion. He has a record of 21 wins, with 14 by knockout and seven losses with four title defenses. The problem is that out of his seven losses, four have come in his last five fights, three by knockout.
After his last fight, a first round knock out by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Dana White, the President of the UFC, said that Chuck Liddell has fought his last fight in the UFC and is retired from fighting. He went on to say that Chuck is part of what got the UFC on the map and will always have a job for life but he needs to stop fighting. In a Chuck Liddell interview I recently watched, Chuck still had the passion to fight even though he had been struggling in his recent bouts. Some people say that the problem is that he has never changed his coaching and possibly become predictable.
One cannot dismiss the fact that the UFC is a young man's sport and, at 39, Chuck is older and this is not the days of Ortiz vs Liddell. Some people say that Chuck is a little older and some of the knockouts that he has experienced in his most recent fights are due to him not recognizing how the sport is changing. Even though Chuck may still want to fight, many believe he should listen to Dana White.
