Ultimate fighting is a sport that offers fighters with mixed martial arts experience to compete in an all-out freestyle fight for cash purse awards. The sport has been around for quite a while, but it wasn’t until the reality television show “Ultimate Fighter” aired in 2005 that the world suddenly became aware of its newest favorite spectator sport.
The “Ultimate Fighter” series is a reality television series. Its more than just fighting. The shows chooses lesser known MMA fighters who have shown potential in the sport but either don’t have the resources or the contacts to get to the forefront of the fighting scene.
These fighters are brought into a house where they are separated into teams that compete against each other in challenges and each week, depending on who wins the challenges, one team picks a player from each team who fights in the octagon under the official rules of the sport the same as if they were doing so professionally. The winner of that fight remains in the group and the loser goes home.
The show is popular because it not only gives an inside look into this sport, but it also puts the competitors in a living situation where they are forced to interact every day and train together, which often escalates into confrontations or builds friendships. As the competitors fight one another and leave the show, this affects their co-fighters as well. So there is a lot of drama, plenty of fighting action and lots of training insight. In the end, the final two fighters face off in one last battle for the prize of a million dollar professional contract. Part of the appeal of the show is the fairness. There have been a couple of final battles in which the fighters were both so good that even though there was only one victor, the UFC gave both fighters contracts because they were both champion quality.
